The FOSS awards is one of our favourite times of the year.
Created back in 2022, these awards are all about celebrating Free Open Source Software and the teams who maintain these vital programs.
The 2025 edition has been another great year, with thousands of votes and some nail biting races, and we’re now happy to be able to announce the winners and top tier nominees!

Best Communication Software

A strong showing from chat app Revolt helped them claim the top spot this year. As in 2023, collaboration platform Mattermost made it onto the podium, alongside video conferencing software Jitsi.
Best CRM & Support Software

The most active category in 2025, this one went right to the wire, with an incredible battle over the final couple of days. In the end EspoCRM secured the winners spot, closely followed by SuiteCRM, whilst 2023 winners Dolibarr made 3rd position.
Best Knowledge & Documentation Software

Back to back victories for Joplin, with their users coming out in strong numbers just like previous years. Mediawiki and FOSS awards newcomers Docusaurus made top tier billing.
Best Community & Social Software

With decentralised platforms in the spotlight more than ever, growing social network Mastodon took the win in a competitive battle, edging out phpBB and 2023’s highly recommended Discourse.
Best Project Management Software

An impressive late surge from newcomers Plane saw them scoop the win in the project management category, with OpenProject pushing them all the way to the finish line. A strong showing from ProjectLibre saw them also reach the Top Tier.
Best Ecommerce Software

Another repeat winner, OpenCart defended their title in a battle of heavyweights, overcoming popular platforms WooCommerce and Prestashop.
Best CMS

Joomla! Users came out in force to support their CMS of choiceThis took them to a convincing victory, despite being up against powerhouse WordPress, who came 2nd, and the growing headless platform Strapi.
Best Password Manager

Always one of our most popular categories, Password Managers served up another great contest, with the top 3 pushing each other all the way. In the end Passbolt came out on top, followed by the popular BitWarden and KeePassXC.
Best Analytics Software

Another defending champion, Matomo took the crown again – in fact, even one of our other nominees threw their support behind Matomo!
As with the 2023 awards, Plausible and Umami came through as the other top tier nominees.
Best Graphics Software

After finishing as runners up last time around, Penpot takes the win in 2025. As the first open-source design tool built for cross-functional teams, it’s a well-deserved result.
2023 winners GIMP remain in the top tier category, joined again by Inkscape, showing all 3 tools retain a strong fanbase.
AI (New for 2025)

Our first ever AI category brought some fascinating new contenders. Email productivity tool Inbox Zero took the inaugural winners spot, followed by chat app LibreChat and AnythingLLM. This is a category we expect to grow and become more and more competitive each year.
Conclusion
