Sustainability meets technology: What IT professionals really think about green technology…
How often do environmental concerns influence your tech choices?
A strong 68% of respondents say that they actively consider the environmental impact of the digital tools & services that they use, demonstrating a significant level of eco-consciousness in the industry.
Whilst all demographics showed high levels of consideration, notably, men (70%) report slightly higher awareness than women (66%) and under 40s (75%) are more considerate than those over 40 (64%).
What is your view on the environmental impact of internet usage?
Almost half of respondents view the environmental impact of internet usage as an issue needing urgent action, and a further 28% believe it is still important. This level of concerns underscore the growing awareness of the carbon footprint of digital services. It also hints at an opportunity: digital service providers who lead with transparency and climate-positive policies could significantly differentiate themselves in a crowded market.

How important is sustainability compared with price and features?
6 in 10 respondents placed environmental impact as the key priority when choosing the tools and services they use. This comes despite rising costs and tightening budgets within the IT industry, further underlining how important eco considerations have become.
Do you choose tools & services for their green credentials?
All demographics leaned significantly toward “Yes”, however under 40s again showed more willingness to choose green products, with 82% responding yes, compared with 72% of over 40s.
Likewise, 83% of men said yes, over 74% of women.
These figures suggest that tools and service providers with a green focus may already be reaping the benefits.
Do IT businesses have a responsibility to protect the environment?
This near-unanimous response sends a powerful message: the overwhelming majority of people in IT believe that environmental responsibility should be a core principle for online service providers.
With 91% leaning that way, it’s clear that sustainable practices are now an expectation. Providers who lag behind risk reputational damage, while those leading on renewables have a strong foundation for trust and loyalty.
Have you ever avoided a tool or service due to environmental concerns?
IT businesses which don’t take their environmental responsibilities seriously may already be missing out on potential business, with two thirds of professionals turned off by a lack of green credentials.
The 66% figure was consistent amongst all demographics.

Would you pay more for a greener tool or service?
A large majority – 89% of respondents – are willing to pay more for environmentally friendly digital products, with 67% accepting moderate to significant price increases.
This further underlines just how important sustainability is to modern IT professionals, and suggests that providers with a strong focus on green credentials may be able to charge more premium prices.
A combined 94% of respondents indicated some level of willingness to switch to a greener alternative. That level of openness is striking and shows how strongly environmental credentials are starting to influence product loyalty.
It suggests that even established digital tools could be vulnerable to disruption if a greener option enters the market. For providers, this is a clear call to act before competitors seize the advantage.
Do you think sustainability will become a bigger consideration in the IT industry in the coming years?
Over 90% believe sustainability will grow in importance over the coming years. That kind of forward-looking sentiment signals a long term shift in priorities. Businesses should prepare now to ensure they don’t fall behind as the market evolves.

What factors limit people from going green?
While there’s clear enthusiasm for green tech, barriers still remain. Cost and performance concerns dominate, with 60% citing price and 57% worried about reliability. Providers who can prove their green credentials without compromising on quality or price will be best placed to win trust.
Closing thoughts
We surveyed over 500 people working in IT, to understand how environmental concerns influence their digital decisions.
The data reveals a definitive shift in the IT industry toward sustainable solutions. A significant percentage of professionals are now willing to pay premium prices for environmentally responsible products and services, and importantly, they’re prepared to change providers if their sustainability expectations aren’t met.
This sends a clear message to web hosts, email providers, SaaS companies, and other IT service vendors: sustainability isn’t merely an optional feature, it’s becoming a core business requirement. Companies without environmental commitments are already leaving money on the table.
It appears that this trend will only intensify in the coming years. The time for IT businesses to establish meaningful environmental initiatives is now, not just as an ethical obligation, but as a strategic, long term business decision.
